This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving university supporting and enhancing its enterprise IT systems and infrastructure. You will be involved in the wide ranging development and operational activities of the IT Core Services team, contributing towards the administration and management of the virtual and physical servers, systems and software that form the critical core services.

You will be primarily responsible for the practical, routine and technical tasks associated with the day-to-day operations of the enterprise-level IT datacentres and the wide ranging critical services delivered from them. Acting as a third-line contact and subject matter expert for new server and storage service requests and incident reporting, supporting a community of over 20,000 students and 2,600 staff based on campuses in Brighton and Eastbourne.

You will have a degree in a relevant discipline or demonstrable practical experience in a server and storage systems support role. You will possess a broad range of technical skills across Operating Systems (Microsoft Server and Linux based), Storage Technologies (SAN, Fibre Channel Zoning, RAID, Software defined storage etc..), Networking and Network protocols (such as TCPIP, DNS, DHCP, FTP, etc..), and familiarity with Enterprise Backup and Recovery products and concepts. Experience in PowerCLI, PowerShell and bash scripting would be an advantage.

You will be proficient within the virtualisation arena specialising in VMware vSphere and the VMware suite. Experience in enterprise datacentre operations, including power and cooling and operational monitoring tools would be an advantage. We are seeking enthusiastic individuals with IT support experience looking to develop their server, systems and storage area of expertise, with good documentation and communication skills.

We support the teaching and research of the two faculties, which includes everything from Windows and mac devices to complex multi-node Linux based computational clusters, via an array of Linux and Windows labs and research systems, running engineering and scientific software.

About the role

The majority of your role will involve dealing with complex CentOS & Ubuntu Linux systems supporting and used in the faculties; however you will also be one of two deputies for the Team Manager, with particular responsibilities for technical management of all the Linux systems across the two faculties and for providing leadership and mentoring to other team members, potentially including line management. The University has an ITIL based change management system and you will need to be continuously engaged with this process, and to manage and implement local projects as part of the IT work request process. You should expect to be an advocate for user needs, whilst being prepared to constructively challenge wants expressed as needs. 

About you

You should be highly motivated and enthusiastic about working in a fast paced and constantly changing environment and be able to work in a highly autonomous fashion. You must be able to demonstrate considerable experience and knowledge in Linux Systems Administration, ideally with prior experience in a research-led university. Suitable applicants must have a degree relevant to IT Services or vocational experience which demonstrates equivalent professional development. ITILv3 Foundation Diploma is desirable. You do not need experience of line management at work, however you should have a desire to move into carrying out these activities and be able to demonstrate leadership experience either within work or outside.
