My client delivers, hosts in-house and supports numerous own-product and bespoke client software solutions. With in excess of 100 deployed systems, you will play a critical role in maintaining and supporting their IT infrastructure and wider IT systems that underpin these systems and the wider business infrastructure.

Reporting to our recently appointed Head of DevOps and working with our established infrastructure team, your role will also be critical in supporting ongoing development projects.

Primary responsibilities

  • Maintenance & management of Linux environment
  • Maintenance of Java web applications
  • Administration of PHP & WordPress instances
  • Administration of Apache & Tomcat
  • Install, configure and support LAN, WAN, and Internet facing systems
  • Ensuring availability of all relevant systems, through implementation and management of maintenance, monitoring and change control strategies
  • Manage virtual environment and SAN/NAS storage,
  • Maintain network and server (physical and virtual) hardware and software
  • Monitor network to ensure network availability to all system users and perform necessary maintenance to support network availability
  • Plan, co-ordinate and implement network security measures
  • Install and support database instances
  • Manage performance tuning and capacity planning activities to enhance the performance of the network resources
  • Perform routine back-ups and archival of files stored on the network to assist with disaster recovery
  • Assists in maintaining the operating system and security software utilised on the network, including the addition of new users to the network and establishment of rights and privileges
  • Release management duties

Experience required

  • Proven commercial experience as a system administrator, network administrator, or similar role
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of administering Linux based operating systems (e.g. Red Hat) in a service environment
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Microsoft operating systems
  • Ability to use specialist knowledge to advise and support team members in their technical activities in both project and operational environments
  • Ability to adapt to changing technologies
  • Strong knowledge in writing shell scripts and / or utility programs and the principles of TCP/IP networking – these include familiarity with common network and internet protocols (e.g. HTTP, SMTP, LDAP, SFTP, SSH, DHCP, DNS, SSL)
  • Strong experience of configuration management and virtualised infrastructure (e.g. VMWare, SANS) and Simplivity storage architectures
  • Strong knowledge of network security (e.g. firewall management, etc)

  • Linux - Linux shells and shell scripting (Bash preferred), and key command line tools and services; bonus points for some understanding of the Linux kernel, services and OS architecture.
