University of York

Time for a change? Looking for a new challenge? As one of the UK’s leading universities, we’re looking for talented senior developers to join our highly collaborative team delivering software of real value to our staff and students.

About the role

Working on a range of strategic projects, you’ll be involved in developing web/mobile applications and integrating digital services across all areas of the University’s activities.

This is a particularly exciting time in our development as we plan to move our applications and services into AWS (Amazon Web Services). By joining as we design our approach, you’ll have the opportunity to influence its implementation and, although you may not have direct experience with AWS, we’re keen to hear your ideas about how the range of services offered by AWS can be used to deliver innovative services.

We support our staff to learn new skills and as such would like to actively encourage applications from people who have the right attitude and aptitude even if you don’t think you can ‘tick-off’ every tool or technology we’ve listed below. For example, we’ve had developers join the team with backgrounds in Python, Java and C#.

About you

Alongside a good understanding of modern approaches to application and data architecture, you’ll have a keen interest in development best practices and the tools that support it. In particular, we’re keen to hear from individuals with experience in some of the following areas:-

  • An modern programming language/framework such as Node.js, Java, C# or Groovy
  • Experience in architecting web-based applications
  • Taking a lead role in delivery, coaching and mentoring
  • SQL and design of relational and non-relational databases
  • Development and design of REST/GraphQL APIs
  • A passion for Agile methodologies and concepts
  • Amazon Web Services

Equally important is your ability to quickly gain new skills across the spectrum of software development and integration, and your positivity and approach.

What we offer

You’ll benefit from:-

  • 38 days holiday
  • Competitive salary
  • Flexible working
  • Generous pension (including over 20% Employer Contribution)
  • Extensive professional development opportunities
  • Flexible benefits scheme (including cycle to work, dental & health plans, season ticket loans)

The posts are full-time (37 hours per week) and available immediately.
