FIX-text job-description"> We have a start-up mentality within a 150-year-old organisation
What we're looking for
Are you a strong Senior Developer with the experience, ability and ambition to help us as we scale our digital product development team? We are growing our team and so are recruiting senior developers with expertise in building cloud-scale, web and native consumer-grade products to help lead and build the technical delivery.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a big impact for our team and our industry. Our products are used by millions of English language users globally, but we are just at the beginning of achieving our ambitions.
You will be working on a combination of API, web and native products. Our core stack a combination of Node and Java on the backend, React and React Native on the frontend, all deployed on AWS increasingly using infrastructure as code. While we are comfortable on these, we are looking for your experience to help us accelerate our development and make use of new technologies and techniques.
About the New Product team in Cambridge Assessment English
The New Product team is focused on delivering new products and capabilities through user centred design, agile development, R&D and collaboration with university research. The cross-functional team brings product owners, UX, assessment and market expertise along with a strong development team to build impactful digital learning and assessment technology. To give us an edge in finding and developing great ideas, we constantly research new, emerging and maturing technology and combine this with industry standard practices such as serverless, cloud-native architectures and CI/CD. We collaborate with deep, fundamental research in machine learning while building products for a global audience. This demanding but exciting combination is unusual in any team.
Our work involves experimenting in hackathons with new technologies such as AR, VR, Minecraft, blockchain, stress sensors and more. This keeps us innovative and brings fresh new ideas to our team and the organisation.
Work on global products
Cambridge Assessment English develops and produces Cambridge English qualifications, courses and tests, taken by over 5 million people every year in 130 countries and recognised by more than 20,000 universities, employers and governments. Ultimately your contribution will enable the world's leading education specialist to make a real difference to learners worldwide.
In your toolkit
  • You will have strengths in either front- or backend technologies, but should be comfortable working or collaborating in either to keep the team moving.
  • If backend, solid Node or Java in production and at scale.
  • If frontend, React and React Native as well as the associated libraries, frameworks and tooling
  • Solid dev tooling knowledge such as git, Linux command line, scripting, build tools and similar
  • You will be comfortable being the tech lead on product development, making decisions with the team and the Product Owners and Product Managers.
  • Experience of collaborative software projects and processes such as branching, build processes, codebase conflict resolution, refactoring. You will be able to bridge the tech-business discussions.
  • All roles will require modern architecture built across multiple cloud services. Experience of AWS an advantage.
Ambitious deadlines
You must understand how to structure code to be clear and understandable, while being pragmatically refactored. You will be working in an agile team with ambitious deadlines, so you will have experience of modern CI/CD processes and following scrum.
Surprise yourself - and shape your future
Working in a tight-knit team you'll grow your skills and grow further than you thought possible on challenging and stimulating projects that will enrich your career.
