Senior Developer - Python (or any language)

Salary: £48K Circa with an OTE package after 12 months of £55K - £70K.

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Developer to join a rapidly growing technology company. This is an exciting time with some high profile projects in the pipeline for 2020. The majority of development work will be in Python however, candidates experienced in other languages with a willing to learn Python will be considered.

Role of the Senior Developer

Senior Developers report to the Engineering Team Leader / CTO and form a crucial part of the in-house development team. They work in teams with other senior and junior developers, in all phases of the product development cycle. Broadly, the role entails:

·Produce software that will drive new products or upgrades
·Create web interfaces and other similar management systems
·Design, integrate, test and package new products
·Produce software documentation to a professional standard
·Prototype new product functionality prior to committed development
·Write high-level and detailed specifications for new products
·Maintain and extend existing product components (Python), as well as delivering a web-based user interface (template HTML with JavaScript & jQuery). Provide extra focus on non-functional requirements including test coverage, maintainability, performance and scalability.
·Develop internal tools to support development, diagnosis and testing of the product range, including load generators, wrappers around the product (e.g. using Selenium and paramiko) and test infrastructure which can be used with Jenkins.
·Contribute to platform architecture, including longer term evolution of underlying OS distribution and component choices. Research and select appropriate third party components to help develop the product range, considering the need for small footprint, long-term stability and support, and balancing simplicity with functionality.
·Contribute to and extend open source projects - from diagnosing and fixing Squid cache issues (C++).
·High-level design of new products and detailed design of new components, helping refine the approaches taken and setting standards for design quality throughout the team.

Requirements of the Senior Developer

·Fluency working and programming with Linux, working with a range of network protocols. Similar experience with other UNIX may be considered.
·Strong Python skills, with code available for evaluation. In the absence of Python experience, significant experience in multiple (3+) other languages - as well as a demonstrable ability to learn Python quickly - will be considered
·Solid skills working with Web applications technologies and frameworks
·Fluency with HTML, Javascript, CSS
·Solid knowhow of database systems

Who are we?

We’re a firm of UK and European Patent Attorneys and Data Scientists using technology to solve a complex, real-world lawtech problem.  Our hands-on team of passionate industry experts is developing a game-changing lawtech tool. We focus on automating tasks in the patent prosecution process, improving accuracy and saving time for inventors and patent professionals.  We’re looking for a talented, analytically-minded person to work with our data science team over the summer who isn’t afraid to roll up their sleeves, learn fast and take on a challenge.

Who are you?

You're on your way towards a degree in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Data Mining, Data Science).  You have a strong grasp of fundamental computer science concepts such as time/space complexity, hashing, algorithms for sorting, searching and the like.  You have good hands-on experience with some Python and Python ML libraries.  You have practical understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases.  You're a proactive problem solver who thrives in an autonomous environment.  You are comfortable with being dropped into challenging technical problems and being given the responsibility to solve them and you're excited about Data Science!

What’s in it for you?

We’re offering the opportunity to build on your existing skills and knowledge. You’ll be working side by side with the founders in a very flat structure and gain hands-on experience of cutting edge technologies, particularly relating to machine learning and NLP.   You’ll also have the possibility of a full-time role in our fast-growing company!

We are Continuum Industries. A seed-stage startup developing tools for engineers to create better infrastructure. Our tools help to design infrastructure such as railways, roads, pipelines or power lines. The final value of our product is that it helps to get clean water from its source to your hot shower, packets of data from a data centre to your computer and electricity from a wind farm to your light bulb.

We were founded in June 2018 with initial angel funding from Skyscanner's Gareth Williams. Since then, we have closed our first big enterprise customers and we're now gearing up to openly launch our product to the world, but we can't cope with the work on our own.

Currently, we're a crew of ten and we're looking to expand our engineering and product team to develop and launch the fully standalone version of our optimisation engine.

OVERVIEW:

We are looking for software engineers to expand our ability to work with more customers and scale the product, both in terms of features and reliability. The role will helicopter between working on the core of the algorithm, deployment and maintenance of the optimiser to the cloud as well as development of internal tools used to better understand the performance of the optimisation engine.

LOCATION:

CodeBase in Central Edinburgh with opportunities to move to London if of interest in the future.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR FAMILIARITY WITH:

  • Python
  • Software development principles
  • Testing
  • Versioning
  • Go
  • Deployment of software to a cloud platform
  • Passing familiarity with databases (SQL and noSQL)

However, we firmly believe that any (and/or all) of these can be learned on the job.

WE THINK YOU WOULD ENJOY THIS ROLE IF YOU:

  • Get bored easily if you’re working on the same thing for too long
  • Enjoy deploying production code
  • Like working with a large degree of autonomy

WHAT WE OFFER:

  • Decent salary, share ownership options, pension and office coffee served by the CEO
  • Ownership of your work and lots of independence
  • Flexible working
  • Personal training budget
  • Exposure to big engineering companies and the startup world
  • We also don’t really count the days on annual leave
