Infrastructure/Web Application Engineer - Microsoft - Powershell

Infrastructure / Web Applications Engineer

The Application Engineer will provide level 2 (and where required level 3) support to TfL's environments (business critical services for TfL (e.g. asset management, ERP, commercial off the shelf, in-house developed software, transport maintenance and planning systems, online services etc.), proactive identification of issues, fulfilment of Service Requests and problem management in accordance with the agreed service level targets. Out of Hours support, support of weekend or out of hours maintenance or release activities will be required for certain applications.

The key responsibilities are as follows:

  • Responsible for executing support activities to enable fault resolution within the agreed SLAs to ensure the restoration of the services within the team's portfolio
  • Accountable for managing Incidents, problems and Service Requests assigned to themselves.
  • Responsible for Daily Health checks / proactive working / responding to system alerts within agreed service level targets to minimise any disruption to customers and / or users
  • Accountable for recommending service and process improvements for the handling and correction of defects in TfL's live environments to reduce costs and drive less calls to the Service Desk
  • Accountable for escalating service incidents to higher severity when appropriate to ensure on-going operation and delivery of service within SLAs
  • Accountable for working effectively in a team under supervision, instruction and guidance of Application Team Manager ensuring collaboration and coordination
  • Accountable for contributing to technical Knowledge Management for systems in their portfolio

Experience:

  • Broad experience of working in a complex multi-site environment dealing with business applications and real time information systems.
  • Proven track record of working within a support and/or operations environment.
  • Experience of troubleshooting issues, managing incidents, problems and / or service requests within agreed SLAs.

This is a hands-on position where the client is looking for knowledge in:

  • Microsoft

  • Data and Analytics
  • Experience with SQL and Oracle databases

The client is would also like to see DBA and migration experience if possible, but this is not essential.

The Department and role purpose

The Computing and Information Services (CIS) has an annual operational budget in the order of £10m, multi-million pound programmes of change within year, and approximately 140 staff who are predominately based at the Durham University campus. The Senior Leadership Team report directly to the Chief Information Officer with the following portfolios: Strategy and Change; Operations; and Information Systems. CIS provide academic, teaching and administrative services across the organisation that underpin the day-to-day activities of the whole organisation.

Recent infrastructure improvements include investment in a new network backbone, including new cable runs throughout the city to all of the Universities core buildings, new scalable user facing storage, and a new hosting environment. Corresponding business led investment also continues to be made with a new Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning suite, investment in research administration, and maximising the breadth of opportunities available to the University through Office365, alongside numerous other important initiatives.

Under the direction of the Senior Manager (Business Analysis), the Assistant Business Analyst undertakes investigative work to determine business requirements and specify effective business processes, through improvements in information systems, information management, practices, procedures and organisation change.
