Lead Data Engineer

Up to £110,000 (depending on experience)

I am looking for a Lead Data Engineer to join this young e-commerce business based in London. The company are trying to solve the issue of food waste within the UK, and are doing this through offering a unique product powered by data. As the Lead Data Engineer, you will manage the data engineering team with the view to become a Head of Data Engineering within 12 months.

The company:

This company were formed in 2012 and have since grown to 200 employees. They received their last amount of VC funding in 2015 as they are profitable, meaning they are well set up to grow organically and develop the business. They have two main data challenges to solve through advanced data analytics - one is focused on supply chain and logistics and the other is focused on predictive analytics and customer experience. They have built a data infrastructure in Python, AWS, Kafka/Kinesis, Snowplow, Airflow etc.

The role:

As the Lead Data Engineer, you will:

  • Have an 80/20 split in favour of management responsibilities - you will manage the data engineering team.
  • Engage with all stakeholders and customers of the existing data platform in the company, helping the business understand how to service the platform and make data driven decisions
  • Take control of the career development of the data engineering team, putting a development programme in place.
  • Remain technically hands-on with data engineering, running code reviews and ensuring coding quality (Python, AWS, Kafka/Kinesis, Snowplow, Airflow).

Your Skills and Experiences:

  • Experience working with large scale data, in either AWS or GCP.
  • Have experience mentoring or managing a team of data engineers.
  • Have experience developing the careers of your employees, helping them to achieve career goals and targets.
  • Have extensive experience programming in Python
  • Have expertise in a wide range of Big Data tools (kafka/spark etc).

This is a great opportunity for an experienced DevOps and Unix engineer, to join a growing, multi-skilled team supporting a range of customers with complex IT projects. You will be familiar with DevOps culture and with working in multi-skilled self-forming teams using Agile methodologies, having previously work in agile teams.

Your skills and knowledge will be used to instrumental for the installation of all Unix based infrastructure into the On-Prem and cloud solutions as well as configuring and optimising performance. You will also take responsibility for updating, troubleshooting and debugging hardware including making improvements to the current AD units On-Prem or to deployments in the cloud.

You will ideally possess the following background:

Mandatory - SC Clearance - ideally Home Office and already existing

  • Developing and operating the infrastructure and software platforms for the data ingest and data science teams.
  • Expertise in engineering bespoke Big Data applications
  • Adoption of flexible production-grade infrastructure and platform deployment approaches including config management and software defined technology
  • Coordination of discovery activities, evaluation and tool interoperability. This may include coordinating SMEs in a scrum team
  • Storage solutions both On-Prem and in the Cloud including understanding cost efficiencies of both
  • Agile methodologies, particularly working as part of a scrum team is essential
  • DevOps culture, toolsets, technologies
  • Ability to advise or make strategic suggestions for future platform technology, tooling, direction or strategy
  • Excellent experience of AWS cloud platform, including migration strategies and approaches, microservices, docker, kubernetes and development, terraform, clouformation.
  • Use of Confluence, Jira, Slack as collaboration tools and strong familiarity with CI/CD and testing tooling e.g Jenkins or selenium amongst others.
