  • Joining the Product Development team in our Infrastructure Solutions centre of excellence, you’ll design innovative, customer centric, high performance, secure and robust infrastructure solutions with the customer and user experience in mind
  • With your understanding of infrastructure architecture, you’ll make sure the end-to-end design supports the continuous improvement of customer journeys and enhanced customer experiences
  • You’ll work with colleagues across the bank, allowing you to expand your network and gain exposure for you and your work

What you'll do

As an Infrastructure Designer, you’ll be working on service or change initiatives to understand the underpinning infrastructure technologies. You’ll do this to develop and reuse infrastructure solution patterns, making sure both functional and operational requirements are met through the infrastructure design, and that the solution is simple, scalable and supportable.

As well as this, your role will involve working with application and infrastructure platform leads and engineers to validate current and target-state designs, making sure that change proposals are well-considered and that any transitional states are acceptable.

You’ll also be:

  • Using your expertise to develop new products and services so we can specify and develop new products along with our domain customers
  • Delivering cost-effective infrastructure designs that meet the requirements for application hosting, making sure the designs align to the target infrastructure products and capabilities
  • Promoting best practice in infrastructure architecture and designing methods and standards, helping to maintain the bank’s architecture methods for improved operational stability, resilience and security
  • Providing hands on support to domain, platform and feature teams in the plan, design, and delivery of IT solutions, driving short and long term infrastructure strategy for the overall IT project portfolio
  • Helping the feature teams in defining and delivering their required outcomes, participating in sessions such as sprint planning and story refinement retrospectives

The skills you'll need

To succeed in this role, you’ll need experience of defining infrastructure solutions for complex enterprise systems and expert level knowledge of infrastructure based services. Job description

About the Programme:

The Sanger Institute, along with other partners, has launched the Darwin Tree of Life project to provide high-quality genome assemblies for all eukaryotic species in the Atlantic Archipelago of Britain and Ireland. This project will significantly contribute to the goals of the global Earth Biogenome Project, fundamentally changing scientific knowledge of evolution and interactions among millions of the planet’s organisms.

About the Team:

We are building a software development team who will design, build, install and maintain a series of high throughput pipelines for genome assembly and analysis. These pipelines will sit at the heart of the Tree of Life programme and be used extensively by the Sanger Institute and other scientists.

 About the Role:

We are seeking both a Principal Software Developer to contribute to building and optimising the computational infrastructure required to scale genome assembly within this project, streamlining the processing of terabytes of raw data. This will build on Sanger's world-class computational resources, including an OpenStack private cloud environment, a 15,000+ core computational cluster and many petabytes of high-speed distributed file systems and object stores.

 About You:

Team members will be expected to work independently at a technical level, while collaborating closely with colleagues on systems development, and to be comfortable communicating directly with scientific researchers regarding analysis requirements. Recent graduates are also encouraged to apply, although it is strongly desirable that any candidate has substantial development experience outside of coursework (e.g. work experience, participation in open source projects). Bioinformatic/biological knowledge is not essential for this role, but an interest in the science on campus and desire to learn bioinformatic concepts is important.

Essential Skills

  • Degree in computer science, software engineering or comparable experience
  • Demonstrable experience in software development, preferably in a scientific environment
  • Knowledge of core computer science concepts and practices
  • Experience with git and GitHub
  • Expert knowledge of Unix based operating systems, libraries and tools
  • Familiarity with cloud environments and technologies ( for example, OpenStack, GCP, AWS, Terraform, Kubernetes, Ansible)
  • Experience of working in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders

Ideal Skills

  • Experience in bioinformatics analysis and tools
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases
  • Experience with high performance computing environments (e.g. LSF/Slurm)
  • Expertise in Management and Analysis of large data sets.
  • Line Management experience

Other information

Closing Date: 2nd April 2020

This is a 3 year Fixed Term position.

Please apply with your CV and Cover Letter.
