We have a new and exciting opportunity to join our evolving IT and Change team as a Principal Systems Engineer. The Principal Systems Engineer is regarded as the expert of infrastructure standards and best practices at The Nottingham; you will act as a mentor to the infrastructure engineers in regards to core technical, framework and behavioural competencies.
This role is well suited to an individual who can demonstrate technical leadership, excellent stakeholder management and the ability to work autonomously whilst supporting the wider team. You will demonstrate role model behaviour by working collaboratively with wider IT teams, establishing best practice standards and applying technical expertise as a subject matter expert.
The role -
• Support in the development of technical roadmaps and solutions across a 3-5 year period
• Key technical solution owner for business critical application infrastructure
• Provide technical services for the Society’s computing environment. This includes infrastructure, operating systems, databases, technical applications, and business applications
• Provide effective 2nd and 3rd line technical support services to internal customers
• Provides formal escalation support out of hours on approved work to carry out infrastructure changes that may impact business operations
• Work with internal and external teams to identify the impact that new requirements may have on systems
• Responsible for recovery procedures for all systems to ensure they can be quickly restored following an operational problem or a major incident
• Provision of holistic reporting to drive continuous service improvement across the production estate
Your skills -
• Experience working in an infrastructure solutions team providing maintenance, support, implementation, and technical mentoring
• Strong technical experience across a wide range of platforms including Unix, SAN, networking, Windows Server technologies, telephony, and Microsoft 365
• Experience ideally gained in a controlled or audited environment where ITIL processes have been embedded
• Ability to communicate well with both users and technical colleagues verbally and in writing
• Strong customer focus and an interest in the business as well as a capacity for technical learning
• Ability to take ownership and lead the resolution of complex incidents and project work
• Strong problem analysis and decision making skills
