Build and Deploy Lead (DevOps)

The Opportunity:

Manage a team of DevOps engineers that support the software release operations for new roll-outs and updates to existing technology by promoting software through controlled environments, testing and production, identifying and troubleshooting issues and escalating to senior leadership as required to foster timely delivery of solutions for business needs.

Your responsibilities for this role may include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, define and contribute to QBE's DevOps initiative across a global landscape.
  • Develop a clear vision, plan and structure for Build and Deploy team including roles & responsibilities and operating model
  • Contribute to wider IT strategy through providing relevant information which supports decision and action.
  • Positively promote the department, division and company as a whole, in order to maximise brand leverage and develop team profile
  • Participate and lead, where appropriate in all internal meetings, as required, in order to share and develop strategy, knowledge and best practice

You will need to be able to display you have the following qualifications and experience:

  • Advanced skills in DevOps Tools sets such as TFS, Bitbucket, SVN, Jenkins, Artifactory, UrbanCode Deploy, Docker, Kubernetes
  • Skills in associated programming languages such as .Net, Java, SQL etc
  • Cloud integration and management (Azure or AWS)
  • Skills in one or more major operating system platforms such as NT, Unix, Linux etc
  • Excellent people management and leadership skills
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to manage and resolve conflict
  • Excellent communication skills - both written and oral
  • Able to proactively manage customer expectations

We are seeking a DevOps Engineer to join a team building a cloud based trading data analytics platform and investing heavily to ensure the reliability, security and scalability of the environment.

Uptime and reliability is vital to the platform which runs alongside high-frequency trading systems to analyse real-time trading data. The platform runs on Linux, AWS and is heavily containerised (Kubernetes on bare metal deployed via Puppet) and the team very much work with an 'infrastructure as code' mindset.

The DevOps team is not seen as a development support function, but as absolutely critical to the success of the company as a whole. Engineering and Ops teams work very closely together to ensure the use of both the right tooling but also the right process and methodology.


We are seeking a DevOps Engineer with;

  • Broad Ops and Infrastructure knowledge; preferably with very strong Linux knowledge, Puppet and Jenkins
  • Experience of cloud environments; preferably AWS but open

We are seeking a senior level DevOps Engineer to join a superb group of Software Engineers building complex cloud based low latency trading platforms for global hedge funds and asset managers and working in a very modern GCP, Kubernetes, Rust and Kotlin environment, taking ownership of DevOps process and tooling as the team grows.

As the DevOps Engineer you will be the first Ops specialist within a group of highly skilled Software Engineers, currently picking up on DevOps and Site Reliability tasks. You will be responsible for improving container tooling, currently Kubernetes based, scaling the cloud enviornment to deal with low latency challenges and providing an AWS backup to the current GCP environment.

You will have the chance to work with a genuinely elite team solving challenging, but interesting, problems associated with trading technologies.


Skills required for the DevOps Engineer:

  • Strong scripting/coding ability, preferably Java based but very open if another language
  • Excellent knowledge of complex cloud environments, either GCP or AWS
