As the Software Engineering Manager in the Core Services team within Design and Engineering, you will help lead a world class team who are reinventing BBC Online. Core Services are building the shared product infrastructure and services that will underpin and power a more personalised and relevant BBC to audiences across web, apps and beyond.

The team is tasked with delivering the new core web and product services framework on which six of the BBC’s eight audience-facing digital services – News, Sport, Weather, Children’s, Education and Homepage – are based. Role Responsibility

We’re looking for a Software Engineering Manager for Core Services to lead multiple teams across multiple locations (Glasgow, London, Salford). You’ll be an experienced technology leader who understands large scale cloud native systems and applications. You’ll be partnering with the product team in delivering a world class product experience while driving engineering practices forward and provide new capabilities across the department.

As the Software Engineering Manager in the Core Services team within Design and Engineering, you will help lead a world class team who are reinventing BBC Online. Core Services are building the shared product infrastructure and services that will underpin and power a more personalised and relevant BBC to audiences across web, apps and beyond.

The team is tasked with delivering the new core web and product services framework on which six of the BBC’s eight audience-facing digital services – News, Sport, Weather, Children’s, Education and Homepage – are based. This means enabling, and working closely with, these big and much-loved services to create the engaging digital propositions of the future through resilient and sound foundations.

Core Services is a collaborative, dynamic team, with our Product Managers, Engineers, Project Managers and Designers shaping how we build the next generation of products and services. By working with us, you will help build out the wider BBC’s vision to create the world’s best digital services, using cutting edge technology, collaboration, and championing faster, simpler ways of ways of doing things. Specifically, Core Services is responsible for developing:

Smart proxy and traffic management layer : Our highly available and resilient front door which manages load, provides caching for all services, handles failure and manages canary deployments.

Presentation layer: Our highly performant core rendering framework (React) and the design system (GEL) for the whole of BBC online (i.e. a shared visual layer/experience).

Business Layer : Obtains and aggregates data from a wide range of platform services and APIs across BBC online.

Developer Productivity: To enable innovation and speed at scale, our Dev Prod team provides the build, test, deploy services through CI/CI, SRE capability, tooling and champion reliability, performance and an excellent developer experience for all digital products.

Role Responsibility

We’re looking for a Software Engineering Manager for Core Services to lead multiple teams across multiple locations (Glasgow, London, Salford). You’ll be an experienced technology leader who understands large scale cloud native systems and applications. You’ll be partnering with the product team in delivering a world class product experience while driving engineering practices forward and provide new capabilities across the department.

Our tech stack is modern and cloud native (AWS). You’ll get a chance to help the team deliver cutting edge technical solutions that power the BBC’s biggest brands including News and Sport.  As a member of the Engineering Leadership team, you will have the opportunity to work with your peers in engineering and other disciplines to help us make our world class team even better.
