Summary

We are looking for 3 Senior Technical Architects to work with the Architecture team engaged with a number of transformational programmes across HMRC at various locations in the UK. These programmes are fundamental to HMRC becoming one of the most digital organisations in the UK and the plan is to be much bolder, by 2025 we will be one of the most digitally-advanced tax authorities in the world.

The Senior Technical Architect bridges the gap between business problems and technology solutions. They are responsible for authoring Solution Design Documents in association with CDIO strategic IT blueprints. Solution Architects are responsible for working with business areas to align business and IT strategies to maximise the impact of IT Solutions. They create the high-level end to end IT designs for change projects and programmes. They will liaise with other architects ensuring that the high-level design is implemented.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role developing and enhancing HMRC’s services. As a senior architect you will be working across one of the biggest IT estates in Europe responsible for designing, and continuously improving HMRC’s key architectural domains, transforming HMRC’s IT capability. You will also lead on providing support to the development of HMRC’s business strategies and help shape business thinking around exploitation of IT.

You will work with and influence other HMRC’s business areas to ensure they have a full understanding of the IT landscape enabling them to develop change plans within the appropriate constraints. Job description - As a key member of the Architecture team you will be responsible for some or all of the following:

  • Overseeing the creation and quality of cost estimated solution designs; ensuring projects and programmes are fully aligned to the ongoing governance of end to end IT Solutions
  • Steering and championing IT Designs highlighting benefits, opportunities and future capabilities
  • Engage and influence Business Stakeholders, IT Suppliers and other parts of CDIO to support IT transformation
  • Provide strong analytical and strategic insight for our customers; creating an optimal design through an iterative process, aligning the user need with the system requirements and organisational objectives
  • Ensuring IT designs are fit for purpose, fully meet business requirements, deliver value for money and are compliant with our IT Architecture Blueprints
  • Create, refine and challenge patterns, standards, policies, roadmaps and vision statements
  • Effectively manage risks, issues and dependencies, including escalation of issues where appropriate
  • Remain up to date with best practice, new developments and trends digital, IT and architecture industry / communities and reflect this into the CDIO ecosystem
  • Work with business stakeholders to identify potential technology driven business benefits
  • Support complex business transformation programmes
  • Develop solutions in the context of a potential investment business case
  • Ensure traceability mapping from requirements through to logical and solution elements

Responsibilities - Essential Criteria:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral with highly developed collaborative skills and direct experience of successfully influencing business colleagues and suppliers as well as resolving technical disputes
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions, identifying trends and business practices, so that the solutions are understood and accepted by business and IT stakeholders
  • Able to identify architecture sensitivities and cost drivers; working with stakeholders to manage their impacts
  • Ability to look beyond the immediate technical problem and identify the wider implications; understanding how their work fits into the wider IT/Business strategies and IT change programmes
  • A team player with an aptitude and ability for coaching and mentoring aspiring colleagues into motivated and delivery focussed architects
  • Understands technical governance and is able to participate in or deliver the assurance of IT solutions
  • Capable of making and guiding effective decisions, explaining clearly how the decision has been reached. The ability to understand and resolve technical disputes across varying levels of complexity and risk.) Able to make and communicate decisions characterised by managed levels of risk and complexity
  • Ability to look beyond the immediate technical problem and identify the wider implications
  • Awareness of relevant historical context & future impact, understanding how current architecture fits in broader contexts and strategies.
  • Able to understand trends and practices outside their team and how these will impact their work
  • Desirable Criteria
  • Experience in architecting enterprise IT applications, including making use of Cloud, IaaS, SaaS and PaaS
  • SAP platform/architecture knowledge/awareness of either/or HR, Finance, Payroll, Payments in/out. Application integration awareness of system interfaces for example; APIs, SOAP, Restful services and technology experience of project delivery methodologies – Agile, RUP etc
  • Experience of cost estimating that underpin solutions design activities
  • Knowledge of market trends and practices, and how these could impact work streams
  • Either have or work to achieve, professional certifications such as TOGAF or CITP
