Interim Chief Information Security Officer / Public Sector / £800/1000 PD / Inside IR35 / 6 months

My client, a large Public Sector body, have an immediate need for a Interim Chief Information Security Officer to join their complex organisation.

The Main Duties

We're looking for candidates with a strong track record in cyber security at senior management level. This includes delivering transformational security improvements, leading innovation and managing a complex portfolio of projects. As part of your role, you should be willing to undergo national security clearance.

You'll bring a wide knowledge of cyber security and IT to the table, including knowledge of relevant legislation (including GDPR and NISR), understanding of emerging threats and security standards such as ISO/IEC 27001, Cyber Essentials and NIST. You'll also be familiar with ONRs Classification Policy.

A natural communicator and collaborator, you'll be able to inspire colleagues and articulate strategy in a clear, engaging way. You'll take a creative and analytical approach to your work depending on the situation, balancing competing demands and achieving strong results.

As a priority you'll collate work undertaken so far to write ONR's Cyber Security Strategy, produce a comprehensive cyber risk assessment across the organisation and assess our new IT Strategy to confirm and evidence that it will appropriately mitigate identified risks. As part of our overall cyber security strategy, you will develop of a comprehensive cyber security training and awareness programme for staff.

You will also undertake risk based assessments (factoring in identified standards and best practice) on key information and cyber security issues and provide recommendations to the IT Separation SRO, the Data Protection Officer, Chief Information Officer and other key stakeholders.


Essential Requirements

Formal qualifications:

In terms of qualifications, you may be a Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA).

An MSc in Information Security is also highly desirable, along with a relevant senior or lead level certification with the NCSC, although other qualifications will be considered.

Full membership of the Institute of Information Security Professionals, Security Institute, British Computer Society or an equivalent organisation is also highly desirable.


Job related expertise:

You'll also have demonstrable experience, typically of 5 years or more in similar roles across critical sectors. You'll have led transformation programmes, have experience in modern technology and approaches, including cloud deployments and understand our unique role as an independent regulator, who is trusted with sensitive nuclear information to enable us to meet our mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations.

They are currently working on a number of greenfield builds and want someone who can come in and take ownership of the development for one of their core customer facing platforms. You will be responsible for the technical leadership of 2 junior-mid level developers as well as designing and developing the user interface.

Their current tech stack is: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, ReactJS, GraphQL, Non-relational databases, AWS. (They also use NodeJS so there is also an opportunity to do a Full Stack role if that is of interest.)

They are looking for someone with strong JavaScript skills including ReactJS or React Native knowledge to work on their greenfield application builds which are used by millions of users!

Responsibilities;

  • Technical leadership on development of core platform and mentorship of junior developers
  • Development of new software components and product features
  • Maintenance and improvements of client facing projects to ensure they are well architected and optimised
  • Creation of high quality code in line with company best practices
  • Liaising with the CTO to come up with new ideas and map out road maps including new technology

Essential skills;

  • Writing JS code with either ES6 or TypeScript
  • Good experience with ReactJS / similar JavaScript frameworks
  • HTML / CSS (and/or SASS / LESS)
  • Solid understanding of OOP

Desirable skills;

  • Experience with serverside NodeJS
