About the role

This role will be working within Organisation Data Service (ODS). This team nationally provides data infrastructure for the NHS and any organisation working with the NHS. You will interact with the ODS developers and senior management within ODS in support of its existing infrastructure, new care models and the future vision of a Master Data Reference System.  The Senior Systems Designer will be expected to engage on multiple of levels both internal to NHS Digital, NHS England and third-party data suppliers to support new care model construction.

As part of the role you will be responsible for

  • Leading one or more software development teams, solving complex enterprise problems, developing such capabilities within teams and through the coordination of external suppliers.
  • Working with new technologies to assess their fit to specific business problems and alignment with wider organisational strategies and architectures.  
  • Communicating best practice within own and allied teams across organisation. 
  • Monitoring the application components of software development and proactively raising potential issues and then taking actions to resolve.
  • Utilising and adapting appropriate system design methods, tools and techniques to ensure they are applied effectively for successful deliveries. 
  • Providing alternative solution designs and plans that can deliver comparable capabilities with associated expressions of cost, risk, timescales to support evidence-based decisions. 
  • Engineering large and/or complex systems requiring introduction of new or optimised exploitation of existing technologies.  
  • The identification and ability to articulate best use patterns for working with appropriately selected technologies to meet business problems. 
  • Software architecture, design and development with strong skills in a range of platforms, languages, methodologies, patterns and implementations. 
  • The "devops" ownership of systems in their totality; encompassing their application architectures and supporting infrastructures, taking operational responsibility for their entire lifetimes, able to lead the creation of new products from inception to deprecation.

About you

We want you to be set for success, these are some of the key skills and experience that you'll bring to the role:

  • Specialist knowledge in software development, architecture and design with experience of appropriate and representative languages, frameworks, platforms and tools; including knowledge of software delivery methodologies, information processing & standards, security, infrastructure and information governance.
  • Significant knowledge of delivering and operating end-to-end from writing code to operating / maintaining, and continuous improvement.
  • Requisite knowledge of the legacy software.
  • Masters degree, or equivalent experience.
