Lead Project Manager
Buckfastleigh, Devon (with some travel to our other sites during implementations)
£50,000 - £55,000 per annum DOE Plus Benefits

About Riverford

As the UK’s largest independent producer of organic veg boxes, you can imagine that we’re no ordinary e-commerce company. We deliver to more than 50,000 households every week and run 3 farms, 2 pack houses, a butchery, a vegetable wholesaler and a restaurant! Every part of our company is enabled through technology, from the PDAs out on the fields, to our website, picking lines and mobile apps. We are extraordinarily passionate about our products, the ethics we demand of ourselves in their supply, and the attention to detail we take in their delivery.

Our high expectations are rewarded by getting to be part of a fantastic business with amazing benefits. We are based in some of the most beautiful countryside in the world, in a modern solar-powered office with all the best start-up trimmings: good coffee, organic home-cooked breakfasts and lunches, top-end hardware and obviously an arcade machine. We are employee owned, and all co-owners share our profits, because we believe everyone should succeed together. When was the last time you heard birdsong while working? Walked down a path and saw the wildlife while having a go/no go meeting? Ate poached egg on toast during a review session? Chatted with a stakeholder over an organic beer? This is life at Riverford.

What we expect of a Lead Project Manager

We’re opening a new chapter of project management at Riverford, and we need you to lead from the front as an authority, motivator and manager of a team tasked with delivering the IT roadmap.

You will work with the wider IT team and every department of the business to define business cases, project plans and manage the implementation of both large and small software projects to the business.

It will be your responsibility with both your direct reports and virtual teams to deliver well defined and thought out projects, managing the full lifecycle and controlling the obvious areas of cost, time and quality. Working with business stakeholders will be second nature to you, along with managing change and communication to all our co-owners and franchisees.

You will be a strong communicator who is able to clearly and confidently outline decisions, approaches and conclusions that are key to wider business success. You’ll be exceptionally process-driven, wanting to embed governance into the business as well as your core team. Most of all, you will want to work with like-minded and highly capable people to deliver fantastic, flavoursome and ethical food, steered by your team’s delivery.

What you should know

We are less concerned about specifics and decades of experience than we are about capability, ambition and cultural fit. If there’s something on our list which is out of your comfort zone, that’s fine - but expect us to expect you to pick it up and run with it should you join us! That said, here are our ideal skills for this role:

- Agile and Waterfall methodologies - we implement using both, so a recognised qualification is desirable, but proven experience is a must!
- Requirements gathering - challenging the current process/thinking
- Business process - willing to get under the hood and understand them
- Hands on - you won’t just be writing PIDs and updating plans
- Highly organised - capable of being one step ahead and attention to detail
- Implementing business systems - delivery of 3rd party and internal solutions
- Structured, but flexible - projects need structure whether Agile or Waterfall, but you’ll have the ability to call on common sense when appropriate
- Latin plant names - kidding…
- Best practice - managing risk, budget and control of projects, the expected stuff…
- Ability to prioritise - hitting deadlines
- JIRA - we communicate direction and progress through user-stories
- Project team management - our teams are cross-functional as needed
- Presentation - delivering clearly and confidently up to Board level

Your experience

- Extensive track record of implementing large ERP and business system software projects
- Demonstration of managing multiple small projects simultaneously
- Responsibility for direct reports, providing mentoring and development
- Excellent communicator who is confident talking with technical and non-technical people
- Proven project management skills in a structured, but pragmatic world
- Comfortable working to define suitable processes where none exist
- Contributed real value and helped to deliver high-quality software

Other organisations may call this role Senior Project Manager, Lead IT Project Manager, Technical Project Manager, IT Project Delivery Manager, or Technical Project Delivery Manager.

What you get

We reward our staff over and above the norm. We offer a working environment unlike any other and we are constantly improving. That said, here are the usual suspects:

- Matched contributory pension
- 33 days’ holiday including Bank Holidays
- 25% off all our stunning ethical organic food and local partners
- Heavily subsidised, home-cooked organic breakfast and lunch
- 10% of our gross profits are shared with the co-owners (tax free)
- Free grade-out organic fruit and veg
- Amazing organic coffee selections; morning espresso to stay-late cafetières
- BIG summer and winter parties, along with all year get-togethers
- Multiple screens and any software you need
- 10% training time and £1,000 contribution each year
