Who are you?
We're looking for some awesome web developers who want to do it right, do it together and make a difference. You'll be part of a team helping us to develop websites, apps and internal systems so that our customers can get peace of mind with the right insurance cover for their homes, holidays, wheels and pets and our staff can make life easy when it's time to make a claim.

Who are we?
With a history of almost 200 years we pride ourselves on being a leading provider of award-winning insurance solutions in the UK. We've scooped a Gold Standard Insurance Award for the last nine years running and received a five star defaqto rating for offering the highest quality products in the market.
We take pride in creating a supportive, inclusive and safe environment, encouraging people to bring 100% of themselves to work every day and where our people are our most valuable asset. With over 2,800 employees based across our offices in Bournemouth, Eastleigh, Gloucester, London and Manchester, our people help Ageas create a thriving, creative and innovative place to work, which is echoed in the service we provide to over five million customers.
We are the Proud Partners of Bourne Free - Bournemouth Pride, a Stonewall Diversity Champion, a signatory of the Women in Finance Charter and the Insurance Inclusion Pledge and support the Rays of Sunshine and will continue to broaden our Inclusion agenda.

Our purpose is clear: To make insurance easy and personal for our customers. We live and breathe our values we care and respect those around us; we dare to push our boundaries, we deliver what we promise, above all, we learn together, inspire others and share success

What we expect you to have:

  • Good understanding of JavaScript (ES2015 / ES6)
  • Knowledge of how to work with REST API's
  • Solid understanding of Front End and Back End development
  • Effective analytical skills, taking a methodical approach to problem solving
  • Good knowledge of web development, architecture and standards

What we would love to see:

  • Knowledge of React (since we use this for our Frontend)
  • Knowledge of NodeJS (since we use this for our Backend)
  • Knowledge of any JS Frameworks (because React can be taught)
  • Knowledge of Unit Testing
  • Knowledge of Agile methodology and practices
  • Proactive and self-organised with the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong team working and collaboration skills (communication is critical)
  • A positive approach to challenges, enthusiasm to tackle new technology and ability to take ownership

During a typical sprint, you will:

  • Collaborate with teammates
  • Participate in Daily Stand Ups
  • Get involved with Sprint Planning
  • Take part in the Sprint Review
  • Contribute to the Sprint Retro
  • Help with Backlog Refinement
  • Find out how we can do things better
  • Provide support for releases including squashing bugs that have been hiding

The Role
You'll be joining us at an exciting time as we are creating a new team of talented and creative people with a love of problem solving and who are passionate about developing high quality web applications.

To ensure we focus on the right things and deliver changes when they're needed, we've adopted Scrum methodology, so you will be working closely with the business, analysts and testers and will be fully involved at all stages of the development lifecycle from the initial idea to the delivery.

This means you will be designing new functionality, suggesting enhancements, tackling technical debt and live issues, providing estimates, writing code, creating automated tests and implementing changes, all within project deadlines.

That sounds like a lot to take on, but don't worry, we're all in it together! Coaching and learning are part of the team's DNA, so you'll be able to help others and get the help you need, just by asking. And curiosity will get you a long way - if you are naturally inquisitive, pro-active about finding out more, confident to try things out and keen to deliver to a high standard, you'll fit right in.

Our products range from simple web services to web front-ends to full end-to-end systems. Some are traditional server-hosted products and we also use CI/CD to support our cloud-based applications so there is plenty of opportunity to stretch your comfort zone.

Never been in an agile team? No worries, this is what we do:

  • Coach and help teammates on good practice agile development techniques, architectural decisions, analysis, coding, testing…
  • Research better ways to do things
  • Fully understand a user story (requirements) and the expected outcome, break it down into manageable chunks and create the relevant business driven development (BDD) scenarios
  • Work collaboratively with the Product Owner/Analyst and Scrum Master to agree what's possible in the next sprint (2 weeks) and define the Sprint Goal
  • Demo new functionality and explain how the user stories have been fulfilled
  • Provide daily updates about progress towards Sprint Goal, what happened yesterday, what's planned for today and whether anything is in the way
  • Suggest areas to help the team evolve, improve productivity and identify where we can assist in meeting business objectives and requirements

Want to be part of a Winning Team? Come and join Ageas.
