Economic Adviser - Data Analyst at Ofcom

Salary range: £40,000 to £70,000

Location: London and Edinburgh

Ofcom is the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications sector. We regulate TV and radio, fixed line and mobile telecoms, postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate, always with the aim of furthering the interests of UK citizens and consumers.

Ofcom also expects to regulate online harms in the future, including protecting adults and children from harmful content from social media giants. Designing effective ways to achieve this is a new and exciting challenge. For those with strong quantitative skills, this is an opportunity to undertake ground-breaking data analysis and be at the forefront of such work.

Economics is central to Ofcom’s work. With a team of over 60 people, Ofcom’s Economics Group is one of the largest in the competition and regulation economics profession.

You will be an experienced economist able to demonstrate an excellent grasp of economic theory and a track record of applying that knowledge to the real world. Ideally, this will be in a competition policy or regulatory environment.

You will have experience of planning work and taking ownership of the delivery of outputs. You will have excellent communications skills, being able to explain economic issues in internal governance meetings and with external stakeholders, and being able to write clearly and precisely, including for non-specialist audiences.

We are particularly interested in hiring Economic Advisers with strong data skills. You will have experience in working with large data sets and knowledge of AI and machine learning techniques. You will welcome being at the forefront of identifying when and how Ofcom can use these techniques in its work, including for the new and important challenge of regulating on online harms.

All Ofcom staff enjoy generous benefits including private medical care, a private pension and 25 days’ leave (with the option of purchasing up to 10 additional days).

Ofcom offers flexible working arrangements to help manage work and personal commitments. We have family friendly policies that actively seek to support our colleagues and enable our teams to work in the most effective way. We welcome applications from candidates who would like to work part-time or flexibly, so please tell us what your preferred working arrangements are.
