As we look to grow our Systems of Integration team, we're now looking for a BI Developer to join our Customers IT team based at either our Ipswich or Northampton sites.

* Utilising relevant tools and technologies in order to write high-quality, scalable code that is compliant with secure coding industry practices
* Supporting test and deployment activities including the provision of a deployable solution to ensure releases are of high quality and business risks are managed carefully

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a background of working across the full software development cycle and will possess a solid understanding of development practices and procedures. Technically you'll be able to display experience in Cloud DevOps (AWS/Azure), SQL, SSIS Deployment pipelines (Azure DevOps/Atlassian) and Git Source control. An understanding of data warehousing and Python would also be highly beneficial.

About the team/job

We are seeking an experienced project leader for activities and resources supporting model organism genomics at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI).

Mice, rats, zebrafish, flies, worms and yeast are studied extensively by scientists around the world to gain fundamental insights into human biology.  The Alliance of Genome Resources (AGR, www.alliancegenome.org) is a major new initiative to develop shared infrastructure, analysis pipelines and data curation workflows for 6 major Model Organism Databases(MODs) and the Gene Ontology (GO). WormBase (www.wormbase.org), a founding member of the Alliance, is dedicated to providing integrated information on the genetics and genomics of the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans.

You will lead a team that acts as the genomics and hub for AGR and WormBase. The team’s responsibilities range from designing and deploying large-scale data integration and genome analysis pipelines, to curating the canonical reference genome and annotation for C. elegans. The team also collaborates closely with the Wellcome Sanger Institute to produce WormBase ParaSite (parasite.wormbase.org), which uses the Ensembl platform (www.ensembl.org) to provide access to hundreds of genomes for parasitic worms that damage human health and food supply.

You will be part of the Eukaryotic Annotation Team (led by Kevin Howe), which itself is part of a wider cluster of resources that includes Ensembl (led by Paul Flicek). EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is Europe's leading provider of information services to biological researchers in academia and industry.

Your role

Under the supervision of the Team Leader, will operationally lead our contribution to the Alliance of Genome Resources, WormBase, and WormBase ParaSite. You will work closely with peers at international partner sites to ensure that the overall goals of these projects are met.

Your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Line management of a team of 5-7 bioinformaticians, developers and curators
  • Leading the development of genomics data analysis and integration pipelines for the Alliance of Genome Resources and WormBase
  • Project management for the provision of parasitic worm genomics data via the Ensembl platform

The way we work
The technology team is split into smaller groups of 5-6 developers plus an automation QA based around small projects. Each highly collaborative group chooses their own way of working from Kanban to GIST planning in a continually evolving process. All work items are a collaboration with our business colleagues. As part of this, we approach work with a Lean and MVP mindset often running A/B tests to validate ideas early.

What you will really be doing
Historically our web developers have done both back and front end working with our UX engineer and Marketing teams. As we expand our team we are looking for a front end specialist in this new role.

We are be looking for someone to work with our C# web developers and UX engineer to bring to life concepts from our marketing team.

This will include:

  • Building new concepts and high fidelity prototypes with our UX engineer
  • Work with our stakeholders to help create a better user experience for our members
  • Advise our software engineers on javascript best practice
  • Help build out our Javascript Testing
  • Optimize our Javascript build and deploy toolset
  • Expand our use of Gatsby


Skills & Requirements
